In Sri Lanka, living standards have fallen sharply due to the economic crisis since 2021. In the villages of Maharambaikkulam and Poonthoddam in the north of the country, employment opportunities are limited. Many women have lost their incomes. Access to microcredit to start or expand a small-scale business contributes to their financial self-sufficiency and strengthens the local economy.
This project will initially provide loans to 20 women targeting different sectors such as agriculture, garment making, dairy production and vegetable sales. With the aim of eventually supporting 10 more women through repayments of previous loans. Part of the micro-credit programme includes six months of training in entrepreneurship, project management and financial management. After the loan is disbursed, their business is monitored and they receive support in repaying the loan.
The chosen approach increases the economic independence and financial stability of the women involved. Repayment of the loans also creates an ongoing flow of funding that can be used to support other women in starting or expanding their businesses. The project creates new opportunities for local employment and contributes to an improved standard of living in the community in a sustainable way.
The implementation of this project is in the hands of Rockids Foundation and Prosperous Life with support from Wilde Ganzen Foundation.
